Abstract
This paper presents estimates of New Zealand net migration and international out-migration by region for the periods 1986–91 and 1991–96, extending the regional migration estimates published under the University of Waikato’s New Demographic Directions Programme. A range of indicators is used to compare and contrast the migration characteristics of New Zealand regions over the decade 1986 to 1996. Few differences are found in the interregional (internal) migration patterns for 1986–91 and 1991–96. High international outmigration rates from all regions are estimated for 1986–91, a period of sharp contraction in regional labour markets. Abatement of international outflows from each region and a big increase in the flow of international in-migrants to some regions characterized the period 1991–96.
